Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
Vice Chair Named Baltimore City Hispanic Commissioner

Baltimore, MD—October 11, 2017—The Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (MDHCC), the leading chamber of commerce representing and connecting over 60,000 Hispanic-owned businesses in the region, is proud to announce that Baltimore City Mayor, Catherine Pugh, appointed MDHCC Vice Chair, Juan Barbarán, as a Baltimore City Hispanic Commissioner last week.

"I feel so lucky and humble to be part of this amazing opportunity in Baltimore City,” Barbarán said of his new position. “For an immigrant like myself, I don't have enough words to describe how fortunate I am and how much it means to me to have the chance to give back to our City. Seventeen years ago, when I was on a plane coming from Peru to America, I had a few dreams but never thought or imagined that I will be representing my people and be the voice for them years later. I am living the American dream with my eyes wide open!”

As a Baltimore City Hispanic Commissioner, Barbarán will join nine other individuals in serving as a liaison between Baltimore’s Hispanic community and Baltimore City government entities. The Commission’s focus, as their website explains, is to research and monitor “issues and policies affecting Baltimore’s Hispanic/Latino population, and recommends legislative and policy solutions to the Mayor, the City Council, City agencies and other organizations,” in addition to promoting awareness of Hispanic culture within Baltimore City.

Barbarán’s seat on this important Commission comes on the heels of the launch of Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s first chapter, which serves the Greater Baltimore Region. MDHCC leaders are proud to support Barbarán and take part in the continual strengthening of Hispanic and Latino representation in the Baltimore area.
