Amazon Construction

1. What is the focus of Amazon Construction, Inc?

Amazon Construction, Inc.’s main focus is to provide quality residential and commercial construction and remodeling services to handicap, physically challenged and elderly people in need of specialized work to ease any accessibility problems that they may have at their residence and/or place of work. We also perform all sorts of remodeling work, including different trades such as electrical, mechanical, plumbing and structural/concrete if required as part of project.

2. Why did you decide to start / join Amazon Construction, Inc.?

I decided to start Amazon Construction, Inc. after making the decision of leaving my position as a Project Manager for a Washington DC based company doing Federal Government work. The initiative arose from the multiple concerns that I had regarding my future as an employee for a big company and not getting the recognition that I expected for the hard work and efforts made by my team of coworkers to make every completed project a successful one.

3. Who are your clients?

During the last 10 years I have worked directly with the MD Department of Housing and Community Development, Arundel Community Development Services, Prince George’s County Department of Housing and Baltimore City Department of Housing, in addition to a few private residential projects mainly in Anne Arundel County and PG County.

4. What impact has being a member of the MDHCC had on you and your business / company?

At this point I have not had the opportunity to get involved as much as I would want to with the MDHCC, becoming part of this organization was a suggestion made by a friend, Mr. Erick Oribio who’s an active member of the Hispanic Community here in Maryland.

5. What is the most important lesson you have learned from being a business owner or in your current position?

I have learned patience to become more tolerant about life.

6. What are your expansion plans for the future?

I’m trying to get a minority certification and getting involved into the private-commercial contracting or any other government organization not related to the housing / rehabilitation business. It has become very difficult to be competitive and the economy has directed us to lower our prices in order to keep ourselves busy. We have been in business for 13 year and as a small business have been forced to make radical personnel reductions.

7. What business and leadership advice can you give our members?

Never give up.

8. What is your favorite Spanish Word?

What is your favorite Spanish author and why? I have several; Miguel de Cervantes is one of them. Don Quijote has been what I believe a master piece of Spanish literature, but I also like Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa.

9. Café…con leche y azucar or black?

Depends on the time of the day, preferably Café con Leche.
