Dear MDHCC Members and Friends,

We started off 2016 with a big bang by honoring professionals and individuals for their exceptionalism and for the impact they have had in the Hispanic business community. This year, we added the new award category of “Legislator of the Year” and also awarded our second “Chairman’s Leadership Award” to Maryland Governor Larry Hogan. The winners were announced during the Gala’s award ceremony. If you missed the Gala, please scroll down to see each category, the finalists and the winners. This year marks our 30-year anniversary, a significant milestone for which the Chamber will be hosting a grand celebration in September or October.

In 2016, we want to continue with our momentum of growth and partnerships! I want to take a moment to thank Enrique Melendez, our Immediate Past Chair, for his leadership and for establishing and leading the Chamber’s strategic direction these last two years. I also want to thank Veronica Cool, our former Chairman, for setting the tone four years ago and for being a leader that took the Chamber to new heights. My deepest admiration and sincerest gratitude goes out to these fine individuals who selflessly led the organization and our board of directors.

I also want to thank the team at Clemons & Associates, Inc., especially Crista LeGrand, Becca Stinner and Vince Mullhausen, for the support they have provided the Chamber for many years. In February, we will be transitioning to Waverly Management, under the direction of Seth McDonnell. We believe that Waverly Management is the right size and has the right tools to assist us in the next phase of our development, and we are very excited about this new chapter in our growth.

In 2016 and 2017, our Chamber will focus on five key strategies:

Hire an Executive Director, a Marketing Coordinator and a Membership Director;
Increase our corporate memberships by 20 percent;
Grow our individual membership by 25 percent;
Continue to partner with local chambers for events and the Minority Legislative Reception, and
Support legislation that is both pro-Hispanic and minority-owned businesses and that creates an inclusive, competitive and fair landscape for small businesses in Maryland.

I also wanted to extend an invitation to our members to our 2016 Minority Legislative Reception on Feb. 4, 2016. Register here if you are a member. We are once again partnering with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Montgomery County; the Baltimore Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; the Southern Maryland Black Chamber of Commerce; the Governor’s Commission of Hispanic Affairs and the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives. I would like to thank BGE, our Chairman Circle Partner, for their continued support of our Chamber and for their support of this important reception during which we will unveil our new legislative agenda. This is surely an event you won’t want to miss!
