Statement from Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III Regarding Impact of President Trump Executive Orders on Prince George’s County Residents

Upper Marlboro, MD - Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, released this statement following the Executive Orders of President Trump on ACA defunding, building a border wall and withholding federal funds from arbitrarily decided “sanctuary” jurisdictions, instituting a travel ban from Muslim countries, disallowing refugees and immigrants to enter the country, as well as President’s Trump’s Federal worker hiring and salary freeze.

"In the first 10 days of the Trump administration, we have witnessed a flurry of Executive Orders that defy our Constitution, are questionable in the legality, and are against our ideals as Prince Georgians, Marylanders, and Americans. Additionally, these Executive Orders are having a direct and consequential impact on our residents, communities, economy and the operating budget of Prince George’s County.

None of our residents deserve to live in a climate where they fear for the safety and security of their families. Nor should they shoulder the impact to our local economy that these Executive Orders are unnecessarily creating.

Last year, the Prince George’s County Council unanimously passed two resolutions that I supported, CR-009-2016 and CR-002-2017. These resolutions were introduced and passed to combat any activities that lead to anti-immigrant activity, racial bias and discrimination, hate crimes, and harassment in Prince George’s County as well as protect refugees in Prince George’s County. The spirit and intent of President Trump’s Executive Orders are in direct conflict with these resolutions and I applaud the County Council for putting these resolutions in place before the President’s actions were ever administered.

I find it very disheartening that Governor Hogan has remained either silent, complicit, or supportive of the recent actions of President Trump. As our Governor, he represents us and should be standing up for our ideals not endorsing President Trump's agenda of hate and fear. I am calling on all Prince Georgians and Marylanders, including Governor Hogan, to lend their voices and call upon President Trump to rescind and overturn these Executive Orders.”
