MDHCC Launches Entrepreneurship Expo Series
Future of Food, FoodPreneurs are Focus
 

 

Baltimore, MD—May 02, 2018—The Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (MDHCC), the leading chamber of commerce representing and connecting over 60,000 Hispanic-owned businesses in the region, will hold its first MDHCC Entrepreneurship Expo on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the Living Classrooms Under Armour House in Baltimore City. The 2018 Expo will highlight the Future of Food and showcase the efforts of local businesses (#foodpreneurs) in responding to the rapid changes in the food industry.

A chief goal of the expo, in addition to highlighting the production, farming, distribution, retail and recovery of food, and formulating solutions to problems in community farming, urban agriculture, sustainability, heath & nutrition, and funding, is to bring together minority entrepreneurs and mainstream investors, angels and seed founders. “These two communities [minority entrepreneurs and mainstream investors] do not interact,” said MDHCC’s Chairman and President, Jorge Eduardo Castillo. “That’s a problem that we are tackling head on. ‘Access to Capital’ has become an overused phrase that typically yields poor results in underserved communities for a variety of reasons. Our entrepreneurs need access to mainstream investors who typically, just by virtue of how the system has been designed and grown to be, invest in companies founded and run by white males,” he continued.

The Expo will be hosted by the MDHCC’s partners at Sagamore Development, and is made possible through the ongoing partnership with the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, Black Hispanic Indian Association of Johns Hopkins’ Carey Business School, The Reinvestment Fund, Baltimore Development Corporation, The Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce and local video production company, Adventure Productions.

Like its fellow Title Sponsors, Adventure Productions understands the importance of building solid business relationships. Owners George and Carol Stover are proud to continue their partnership with the MDHCC, with media coverage of the Expo and other video projects in both English and Spanish.

“Our partners have been terrific and we are thrilled to be able to collaborate to bring such important issues to the forefront of the food scene and agricultural forum,” said Corina Morga, the MDHCC’s Greater Baltimore Regional Chapter President. “This topic is of deep importance to Maryland, but especially to the people of Baltimore where we see huge disadvantages to minority producers as well as consumers. Along with issues like food deserts, for example, there is a lack of investor support that affect minorities more profoundly than their white counterparts,” she concluded.

Through a range of exhibitors and expert panelists, the MDHCC Entrepreneurship Expo seeks to bring awareness to the local community about the pressing issues facing the food industry, showcase how innovative entrepreneurs and organizations are collaborating together in the food economy, and bring together funding resources for business owners in Baltimore to move the agenda forward.

Individuals involved in the food industry, from growing and manufacturing to selling, are encouraged to exhibit or purchase a Foodie Pass to take advantage of the diverse exhibitors, delicious samples and the panel discussion by experts in the fields of nutrition, agriculture and sustainability.
